Magnetizing an Alnico guitar pickup magnet with a Neodymium magnet is possible, but it requires some caution and the right technique. Here’s a guide on how to do it safely and effectively:
Materials:
Gloves (optional, but recommended for safety)
Instructions:
Identify the poles of both magnets. Use a gauss meter or a simple magnetic field detector to determine the north and south poles of both the Neodymium and Alnico magnets. This is crucial for the next step.
Prepare the workspace. Choose a clean, dry, and clutter-free area to work in. Make sure there are no sensitive electronic devices or equipment nearby, as strong magnets can interfere with them.
Secure the Alnico magnet. Place the Alnico magnet in the groove or channel of the wooden or plastic block with its desired polarity facing up. This will help you control the movement and prevent the magnet from rolling or jumping during the magnetization process.
Stroke the Alnico magnet with the Neodymium magnet. Holding the Neodymium magnet firmly, slowly and steadily stroke the Alnico magnet from one end to the other, always maintaining the same polarity alignment (north to north, or south to south). Repeat this stroking motion 10-15 times in the same direction.
Flip the Alnico magnet and repeat. Turn the Alnico magnet over so the opposite pole is facing up, and repeat step 4, stroking the magnet 10-15 times in the same direction (now the opposite direction from before).
Test the magnetization. Use a gauss meter or magnetic field detector to check the strength of the Alnico magnet. If it’s not as strong as desired, you can repeat steps 4 and 5 a few more times.
Important Safety Precautions:
Neodymium magnets are very strong and can pinch or crush fingers. Wear gloves for protection while handling them.
Keep magnets away from sensitive electronic devices and equipment. Strong magnetic fields can damage or erase data.
Don’t hit or strike magnets together. This can cause them to crack or shatter.
